It's all about the light. by Andrew Willock

The New Forest, an incredible location full of photographic opportunities and after deciding on this particular area I came across this rather picturesque scene.

After settling on my composition all I had to do was wait for the rising sun to cast through the foliage to add some nice back light. I certainly wasn’t expecting any mist, as up until that moment there had been no sign or even a hint of mist anywhere, it then seemed to magically appear right on cue. This not only softened the light through the scene but also created separation between the background and the Silver Birch emerging into the morning light.

This dramatic change in light allows me to show how a scene can change so dramatically given the right conditions. Both images were taken within just a few minutes of each other, in both cases I was exposing for the highlights, hence slight changes in my exposure settings. The same minimal adjustments were made in Adobe Lightroom. The first image was really just a test shot but I think it shows the comparison very well.

Final image can be viewed in my main gallery.

Why this Photography trip didn't go to plan. by Dan Willock

After deciding on this location for a sunrise photo I made my usual checks for the weather conditions needed for this composition and they looked perfect, with mist and high cloud forecast. I woke up after an overnight camp to a beautiful morning with everything as predicted… apart from the mist, which for this location is crucial. This is a typical example of how despite the efforts and time are put into the preparation with landscape photography and how heavily we rely on the elements, we are at the whim of Mother Nature. Without the mist which was needed to create separation from the main subject, this composition just does not work. Although the conditions needed didn’t quite come together for a final image, it really was a stunning sunrise and I still enjoyed this little outing.

I will return another day in the hope of capturing the image I had in mind.

Andy is a landscape photographer based in Salisbury, Wiltshire and has been photographing in and around the county for the past ten years. His love for the landscape and the natural environment inspires him to visit new and previous locations to capture them in his own distinctive style and as he experiences the moment. His inspiration stems from his father, who was a keen amateur photographer. At the age of ten, Andy was given a Kodak camera which sparked the moment he became interested in photography. A friend drew him to landscape photography where he developed his niche, and the past ten years have taught him many things…
