It's all about the light. / by Andrew Willock

The New Forest, an incredible location full of photographic opportunities and after deciding on this particular area I came across this rather picturesque scene.

After settling on my composition all I had to do was wait for the rising sun to cast through the foliage to add some nice back light. I certainly wasn’t expecting any mist, as up until that moment there had been no sign or even a hint of mist anywhere, it then seemed to magically appear right on cue. This not only softened the light through the scene but also created separation between the background and the Silver Birch emerging into the morning light.

This dramatic change in light allows me to show how a scene can change so dramatically given the right conditions. Both images were taken within just a few minutes of each other, in both cases I was exposing for the highlights, hence slight changes in my exposure settings. The same minimal adjustments were made in Adobe Lightroom. The first image was really just a test shot but I think it shows the comparison very well.

Final image can be viewed in my main gallery.
